Fragments

‘Fragments’ is an award winning immersive documentary. It uses volumetric live capture to journey into the mind of Lisa as she remembers her lost love, Erik. Within a fractured room, fragments of past memories appear of their life together. Over time the memories become entangled with a haunting vision and eventually gravitate to the shocking moment of Erik’s death.

As you navigate the space to explore these moments, new memories are triggered revealing new pathways through the story. Reaching out with your hands will manipulate the virtual space in ways that are intrinsically connected to the story, creating a truly unique narrative experience.

“Our memory is a more perfect world than the universe: it gives back life to those who no longer exist.” ― Guy de Maupassant

Fragments is composed from audio interviews with Lisa Elin about her late husband Erik who had died just 6 months before. Lisa was terrified of losing Erik, even though he had already died. She was terrified of forgetting him. During the interviews, she would walk around her apartment and reminisce around the moments they had collected throughout their lives together. “Everything has a story” she would say as she explored. It’s this connection between space and memory that ‘Fragments’ will explore. The juxtaposition of the inertly real with the rich memories that explode when we encounter them.

‘Fragments’ will transform how we think about the things we hold dearest, our home, our memories, and most importantly those we love.

Produced by NSC Creative and Atlas V with support from the Magic Leap Independent Creator Program and StoryFutures Academy Production Booster Funding.

“When I see people come out and they’re crying but they also have this light in their eyes. I see this light and it’s like their hearts have opened up; they look discombobulated but also awake. “ ― Lisa Elin

Paul Mowbray, Co-Executive Producer of the experience and Director of NSC Creative. “Our studio has been creating immersive experiences across the globe for 20 years but this is our first mixed reality piece. Fragments is really pushing the limits of what can be done with volumetric capture and spatial storytelling right now. Aaron’s success as a leading XR Creator comes from a deep technical knowledge across multiple disciplines combined with a passion to connect with the audience in a profoundly emotional way.”

CREDITS

The spatial computing edition of this experience would not have been possible without the support of Magic Leap via their Independent Creator Program and StoryFutures Academy Production Booster Funding. This support allowed us to dive deeper into the possibilities of spatial storytelling. Seeing the characters walk around your own room through mixed reality glasses as they tell their story offers a familiarity and empathetic connection that goes way beyond traditional media consumption.

Fragments will harness the power of this transformative medium, changing the way we think and feel about the people around us.

SOUNDTRACK

Director Aaron Bradbury approached Starkey to do the score; during development, the producer’s Crashing Sphere from 2011 Civil Music album Orbits immediately came to mind as the soundtrack for the climax of the film. The rest of the music and sound design, which plays throughout the entire VR experience was composed with this piece as the primary source material; a hybrid digital / analog sound palette. In the creation of this soundtrack, mixes were created which would represent how one might experience the VR film, however, in a real viewing, the mixes and blends of sounds for many of the cues vary depending on the viewer’s positioning and personal experience of the film. Think of Vestige (Original Soundtrack) as a 2D rendering of the score.
